Tom Ford Brand Guide

To give an insight into the brand and truly understand the inspirations behind the timeless design, we must look first at the man behind the brand, a certain Mr Thomas Carlyle Ford. A native of Austin, Texas, Ford claims to have always been interested in design. Initially attending the prestigious New York University as an art history major, before dropping out and moving to LA for a time, Ford then returned to his studies at the Parson School of Design where he majored in architecture. It was during this time that Ford decided that fashion was the route in which he wanted to express his creative talent; securing his first position as sportswear producer Cathy Hardwick’s assistant designer through sheer perseverance alone. Ford has been credited as the saviour of the Gucci brand, becoming creative director from 1994 until 2004, being named GQ’s designer of the year in 2001.

The Tom Ford brand was established in 2005; Ford knew the importance of having a successful eyewear range and a deal was struck with Marcolin to manufacture Tom Ford sunglasses.  The brand, while being American, is heavily influenced by Ford’s experiences in Italian design.
