Swedish based luxury clothing brand Gant began in New York 1914 when Jewish immigrant Bernard Gantmacher arrived in the USA from Ukraine.
Tailoring was his first ever job in his new home and from the Garment District in Manhattan, Gantmacher made his name as a fine shirt-maker selling his products to private labels.
Alongside his wife, a button specialist, his two sons and his cousin, they formed their company, signing off all of their products with a signature G. The Gant brand stood out from the competition immediately – due to the introduction of their colourful Oxford shirts that were a massive hit from the outset. From sleek hand-tailored shirts, which were the de rigeuer for American men in the 1960s to the ever-popular Ivy-league preppy look that is still present today. Gantmacher sold the company in 1967 leaving it to grow an empire over the decades. The new head of design, Matthew Wood, is conscious to encompass the brand’s peerless heritage into all of their latest designs.
