It’s been another remarkable year for Stella McCartney. Both a successful designer and an influential activist, McCartney is changing the industry one giant step at a time. Earlier this month at COP24, in Katowice, Poland, influential figures in the industry gathered to launch the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate action. At the conference, the urgency of climate change and the measures we need to take to halt it was discussed. McCartney sat down with Lucy Siegle, journalist, to talk about climate change and addressed that the fashion industry is one of the most environmentally damaging industry in present day. Announcing the new Charter, she described its work, developed by fashion stakeholders, to outline a commitment to transform current business models in order to meet the current climate change agenda. By signing, brands commit to reporting their emissions every year and making a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Over 20 major fashion companies have already signed and the list will only continue to grow as designers follow in the footsteps of Stella McCartney.
In addition to work in reducing climate change, Stella McCartney has always been an extremely strong-willed activist against the use of fur in fashion. 2018 has seen a dramatic rise in the number of brands who have announced they will no longer use fur in their collections. In the U.K. the Labour party demanded the total band of fur and McCartney spoke out on numerous occasions backing them. This lead to another fur debate in Westminster and McCartney wrote an open letter persuading the consideration to ban fur. In her letter she wrote: “Over the past few years countless brands and designers have woken up to the unequivocal cruelty of the fur industry and have subsequently stopped using fur in their collections. More than 80 percent of British people believe it is unacceptable to buy or sell any animal fur. The world is moving in a more positive direction and it is time for the UK to take the vital next step.” A petition signed by 400,000 members of the public in support of the fur ban was also presented to parliament. Each collection is innovative and new, with McCartney creating new fabrics and materials that eco-friendly but equally as stylish as the damaging ones they replicate. In particular, Stella eyewear is made from completely sustainable materials and this shines through in the natural aesthetics of their campaigns.
Stella McCartney doesn’t limit her ventures to sustainable fashion. In such a position of influence as hers, McCartney never misses an opportunity to make positive change. Her latest platform, Stella McCartney Cares, brings together all her philanthropic ventures under one umbrella. The latest initiative is for Breast Cancer Awareness, as the brand will donate 1,00 of the brand’s Louis Listening post-operative mastectomy compression bras to women undergoing breast cancer treatment. The campaign is a short film named “All is Love” starring Idris Elba and it sheds light on the disease, a cause very personal to both Elba and McCartney. A cast of women reveal their mastectomy scars in beautiful, natural scenes, directed by Mollie Mills and photographed by Ana Sting. The cinematic short film aims to inspire, support and educate, as Idris voices an emotive poem by Kai Isiah Jamal. “Through Idris’ narration, challenge the taboo surrounding men talking about breasts openly with their partners, also serving as a reminder that breast cancer effects both men and women and the experience extends beyond the sufferer to their loved ones.”
