Marc Jacobs’s Grunge Collection Returns
25 years after his Grunge Collection rocketed him to stardom, Marc Jacobs is bringing it back with a new Resort 2019 collection filled with the same Beetlejuice stripes and beanies. Jacobs is celebrating the anniversary of the Teen Spirit mood. Just as the most iconic models of 93’, Kate and Naomi, modelled his collection back then, non-other than Gigi and Kaia are the faces of 2018.
Twenty-five years ago, for his spring/summer 1993 catwalk, Marc Jacobs showcased his first grunge collection. The era’s biggest models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington, walked the runway in his iconic pieces that would skyrocket him to success. The collection for Perry Ellis, was highly publicised due to its stark contrast to the glamourous fashion of the ‘80s. The press was torn in two; either loving or hating Jacobs’s new vision.
He was fired from Perry Ellis shortly afterwards, but in 1997 brought in to revitalise Louis Vuitton where he made huge successes in his career. Jacobs feels the same sense of Teen Spirit in the atmosphere today as he did back then, and he nods back to the past right down to each detail of the collection.
Jacobs has remade 26 looks from the original Perry Ellis line, including striped suits, silk slips, and checked skirts. His team trawled through vintage stores and sources to find the original pieces to model the new collection on. They even consulted Perry Ellis for historical assets and visited the mills that produced the original prints. The new collection, Redux Grunge, is as fitting today as it was in 1993.
In an interview with WWD, Jacobs said: “In the big picture, a redux of grunge evokes going forward while being a little bit more instinctive and a little bit more liberal and not as rigid with the way we do things.” Marc Jacobs has always been experimental, non-conformist and unapologetically different. This new collection is a fresh addition to the styles today, particularly being released around Christmas when glamour and sparkles reign.
At the launch party, Jacobs had Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber model the new looks. Their striped suits and makeup made them mirror images of the 1993 counterparts. ‘25 years later, the spirit of grunge is as relevant today as it was revolutionary in 1993.’
