London native, Lee Alexander McQueen was a visionary who was always one step ahead of the curve. McQueen gained his grounding in design whilst under the tutelage of some of Savile Row’s most revered tailors. It was during his time on the world famous Savile Row that he first gained notoriety as the ‘bad boy’ of fashion. It was alleged he stitched profanities into the lining of HRH Prince Charles’ suit. This was, of course, a joke and McQueen never actually did it. Nevertheless, McQueen’s reputation as a renegade was firmly cemented into fashion lore, which he further enhanced through some of his controversial catwalk shows – such as the infamous ‘Highland Rape’ show of 1995.
The drama and symbolism of McQueen’s shows extends into his design. He is best known for his meticulous attention to detail and his use of unusual materials, colours and patterns to create stunning visual statements. This is perhaps best demonstrated by his trademark skull logo, which features on many of his designs and has been heavily imitated – but never equalled. Like much of his fashion range, Alexander McQueen sunglasses use bold colours and oversized shapes to convey a unique mix of flair, glamour, quality craftsmanship and timeless style.
McQueen’s untimely death in 2010 shook the fashion world to its core. The industry had truly lost one of its brightest talents – he earned a plethora of design awards during his tragically short career. However, McQueen’s replacement, Sarah Burton, who worked alongside McQueen for 14 years, has taken the brand from strength to strength. Burton herself has won numerous industry awards and even designed the wedding dress for Kate Middleton on her marriage to Prince William. The brand has lost none of its cutting edge and remains at the forefront of the fashion world.
